Matetsi Unit 5

Big 5 Hunting Area
It is a significant hunting block within the Matetsi Safari Area, located in northwestern Zimbabwe. It plays a crucial role in the region’s integrated approach to wildlife conservation, sustainable hunting, and eco-tourism. The Matetsi Safari Area, which includes multiple units such as Unit 5, is a key part of Zimbabwe’s conservation strategy, balancing the utilization of natural resources through regulated hunting with the preservation of biodiversity.
Unit 5 is characterized by its diverse landscape, which includes savannahs, woodlands, and water sources, making it an ideal habitat for a wide variety of species. The area is home to large populations of African elephants, buffalo, lions, and leopards, as well as various species of antelope, including kudu, sable, and impala. These populations make it a prime destination for trophy hunting, with sustainable hunting practices ensuring that wildlife populations remain healthy and stable over time.
Hunting in Matetsi Unit 5 is governed by strict regulations set by Zimbabwe’s Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. Quotas are scientifically determined based on the health and population dynamics of each species, ensuring that hunting does not negatively impact the overall ecosystem. This sustainable model helps generate revenue for wildlife conservation efforts, including anti-poaching initiatives, habitat management, and scientific research.
Moreover, the economic benefits of hunting in Unit 5 extend to local communities. Revenue generated from hunting supports community development projects, creates employment opportunities, and funds initiatives to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. These efforts are aligned with Zimbabwe’s broader community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) framework, which seeks to ensure that local populations benefit from the sustainable use of wildlife resources.
In addition to hunting, Matetsi Unit 5 offers opportunities for photographic safaris and eco-tourism, contributing to a diversified approach to wildlife management. This unit’s integration of hunting and conservation tourism underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to preserving its wildlife while promoting economic development and sustainable use practices.
